I just wanted to write a quick article on some of my favorite strategies to lose weight.
1. Cut the liquid carbs out of your diet.
Soft drinks, juice and soy vanilla lattes (my old favorite) will sabotage all weight loss programs.
2. Stop eating three meals a day because you have too.
This is hotly debated subject among diet experts and nutritionists.
Some say “Eating less but more often will boost your metabolism.” I don’t believe it.
The subject of metabolism is very complicated but eating more frequently will not increase it!
Actually, eating less, as in some periodic intermittent fasting, does increase your metabolism.
OK, I’m getting off track. Eat when you are hungry not just because it’s noon and you are conditioned to eat at this time.
Don’t misinterpret this as eating less or more. Just eat when you are hungry not because its 12:00pm (lunchtime).
Look at this way, when was the last time you saw a fat lion or a fat cheetah or a fat wolf or a fat fox?
Yet, their domesticated cousins, the family dog or cat, who we have conditioned to eat at set times, quite often overeats and are quite often over-weight.
That finicky house cat that only seems to eat when he/she is hungry….always lean.
When you are hungry and decide to eat, don’t overeat! OK, I guess that was two quick weight loss tips. Sorry I cheated.
If after a meal you feel stuffed, you are over-eating. Listen to what your body is telling you. Whoops! Was that a 3rd tip, 3 for the price of 1!
3. Eat slower
I have a hard time following this rule so now I eat most of my meals with chop sticks. Trust me, it works great. Wait 20 minutes before going for seconds. Let your brain catch up to your stomach.
4. Use a food diary for a week
There are many free applications out there for your iphone or ipod. Be honest and keep track of everything you eat for a week. Do it! Just by following this one tip, I guarantee you will be amazed. Especially when you add up tip #1, the soft drinks and juices you drink through out the week.
5. Don’t buy junk food when you are the grocery store
No brainer right? The way I see it you can’t eat what you don’t have and you also won’t have to test your willpower this way. I hate when ‘somebody’ (not mentioning names) buys cookies or chips and puts them in the cupboard. Guess who ends up eating them, me!
6. Stop eating cereal for breakfast
Switch to eggs and fruit. (especially grapefruit) Adding eggs adds a great source of protein to the mix. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, don’t take it for granted.
7. Stop taking elevators
Walk up and down stairs. One added benefit, you can never get stuck in an elevator this way. Walking up stairs can also be a good reality check. If you are breathing hard after a few flights, you need to start making some serious lifestyle changes and maybe think about visiting your doctor.
8. Don’t substitute fruit juice over eating real fruits
Nowadays, it is almost impossible to find truly healthy fruit juice. The juices you find in grocery stores are loaded with excess sugar. If you know one, please let me know in the comments below.
9. Challenge a friend or co-worker to meet a fitness goal
Make the challenge public, maybe post it on Facebook and the winner gets something worthwhile.
10. Eat some super foods
11. Plan your meals
Follow a diet program or creature your own. Nowadays, we all are in a rush and when hunger strikes, we just grab something. So instead plan your meals. Tomorrow will always come, but healthy habits have to start today.
There are many weight loss tips, but there are no substitutes for losing weight than good old exercise. All weight loss programs will fail if you aren’t active. So get up off the couch and start that body moving.
13. Wear your ‘skinny’ clothes and take lots of pictures
Now compare today’s pictures with a time in your life when you were in better shape. This can be a great reality check. Unwanted weight gain sometimes goes unnoticed on a daily basis but it is very evident when you see yourself in old pictures.
